Manchester Academy - 3/8/01

Set off from Wigan to get an early train into Manchester, early start on the drinking and a meet up with some of the messageboard regulars. Things never work out as planned though do they?

After missing the first train, I found out that the next train would not be for another hour, because of some kind of engineering works or whatnot. Couldn't wait that long for a drink ,so headed up to the off-licence, and joined the other train station winos boozing on the platform!

Train finally arrived, but it may as well not of done. Some kids decided to further delay my journey by putting concrete blocks along the railway line 5 minutes into the journey, which led to the train not moving for nigh on a hour until they sorted the problem. Spent this time texting all and sundry to try and explain that I'd be late.

Finally got to the Hogshead about 8.30ish, by which time anyone who'd planned on meeting up had already gone! A few mates where still there though, so had a couple of pints before heading off to the venue.

Got in there and they'd already come onstage. Luckily had only missed the first track though. The gig was a strange one. A lot of people hadn't got to the venue by the time Witness came on stage, so the venue was quite sparse. Add to that, the fact that a huge group of Chameleons die-hards with no interest in Witness decided to hog a huge area in front of the stage, then it must of been pretty strange for the band.

The set list was quite surprising. As it was the first full-band gig for a while, I expected a few of the more upbeat rockier tracks, but it was a similar set list to their recent acoustic gigs; So Far Gone, Avalanche, Till The Morning, My Boat, Hijacker, Under A Sun and Still. However, still a good performance nonetheless.

After the Witness set, I went off to meet up with Hannah, who had come all the way up from South London to see the gig (now that's dedication!) All I knew was that she was wearing an Elbow t-shirt, so I spent the next 10 minutes scouring the bar looking at girls chests! Finally found her and we went to watch Puressence, who put on a good show, before meeting back up with some mates. Chameleons were up next..didn't think much of them, but then again, I haven't heard any of their stuff before.

Left around 12.00 and ended up in an indie club in town (Mutz Nutz), where all drinks were 50 pence! The rest of the night is pretty much a haze!
