WITNESS
Under A Sun
(Universal)

Who they? Wigan-bred, Bristol-based five-piece often compared to a young REM
but with a pervading country/folk feel that gives them a sound all their own.
Ray Chan is now joined by second guitarist Julian Pransky Poole and vocalist
Gerard Starkie also plays.

Any good? Markedly more upbeat than their debut "Before The Calm", Witness`
second album manages to be celebratory ("You Are All My Own Invention"),
contemplative (as on "Avalanche") and forceful ("My Boat") all at the same
time. Competent production by Al Clay (Blur, Reef, The Pixies) ensures that
every song sounds fully realised, and the guitar sound is great.

Must hear: Ray and Julian's tasteful and stylish use of slide throughout;
lending a hazy country caress to the proceedings, their guitar work
exquisitely complements the sweet vocals of singer Gerard Starkie. Be
inspired too by their ability to create proper guitar parts as opposed to
relying on riffs as so many bands do at the moment, and their flair in
blending electric and acoustic guitars to such great effect.

Why buy? Witness have created an album of surprising beauty that is both rich
in emotion and high on life. Perceptive songwriting and distinguished
musicianship ensure tat this record is well worth buying.
